South Africa is attempting to vaccinate as many people as possible against the Covid-19 vaccine before the anticipated fourth wave of infections, and citizens can get their shots this weekend. President Cyril Ramaphosa first announced the Vooma Vaccination Weekends initiative in the hope of increasing the country’s vaccination rate. The hope is that by administering Covid-19 vaccine jabs on weekends, people who work during the week will be able to access potentially life-saving vaccines.

According to Foster Mohale, a spokesperson for the Department of Health, a higher vaccination rate, particularly among people aged 50 and up, could significantly lessen the impact of the fourth wave. “This target will only be achieved if there is even greater mobilization across all sectors of society,” read the statement. “As a result, the president has called on all leaders across various sectors of society to join hands with [the] government.”

Dr. Joe Phaahla, Minister of Health, revealed that three out of every five people over the age of 50 have received a Covid-19 vaccine. This amounted to roughly 60%. According to Phaahla, if this percentage increases to 5 out of 5, the power of the fourth wave of infections will be crushed. According to the minister, this will also reduce the number of hospitalizations and deaths in the country.

Phaahla has also expressed gratitude to South Africa’s health-care workers for the sacrifices they have made in the ongoing fight against the pandemic. He expressed gratitude for the work they had done in vaccinating South Africans.

“We would also like to thank the nearly 16 million South Africans who have been vaccinated to date,” he added. Your efforts will ensure that we defeat the deadly pandemic and accelerate the process of saving lives and livelihoods.”
