The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is the most recent social support grant. The grant provides financial assistance to unemployed people who are ineligible for other social grants.
However, many people who applied for the SRD grant, which is worth R350, were turned down. Alternative income source identified is one of the rejection reasons that would appear. The SRD grant is designed specifically for unemployed people. If you receive an amount equal to or greater than R595 per month, SASSA will determine that you have an alternative income and will reject your SRD grant application.
If you receive R595 or more in your bank account each month, you will receive the alternative income source identified rejection message.
To be eligible for the SRD grant, applicants must:
- Being out of work
- You must be between the ages of 18 and 60. If you are 60 years old or older, you are eligible for the older persons grant. If you are under the age of 18, your parent or guardian may be entitled to a child support grant on your behalf.
- No other SASSA grants will be awarded.
- You will not receive benefits from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF)
- You will not be eligible for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)
Visit the SASSA SRD website at https://srd.sassa.gov.za for more information, or call the SASSA helpline at 0800 601 011.
